Today we talk community renewables, clever housing and star rating systems in The Sustainable Hour as the communities around Geelong and the Surf Coast are charging up for an energy transformation which is both clever and economical.

Links, excerpts and more information about what we talked about in this Sustainable Hour
In the first half of The Sustainable Hour on 16 August 2017, our guests are Sally Groom and Julie Dingle from Anglesea Community Energy who talk about their exciting project in Anglesea’s old coal mine: the ‘Repower Anglesea’ proposal – and in the second half we talk ‘clever housing’ and Ten Star zero carbon house construction with architect Tim Adams from f2 Design.
More info below.
They want to mine the sun in Anglesea
Meet Julie Dingle (left) and Sally Groom (right) from Anglesea Community Energy and Repower Anglesea. They propose to transform Anglesea’s former brown coal mine and power station into a renewable energy generation and storage facility – 20 MW has been mentioned – as well as a visitor centre comprised of a science, technology and environment museum, art gallery, theatre, café and retail store.

Repower Anglesea presentation
SCEG is having its AGM on 17 August 2017, and Anglesea Community Energy will be doing a presentation there about the Repower Anglesea Proposal.
And there is an important community meeting – the Anglesea Futures Community Conversation – on Sunday 20 August 2017 at 10am–1pm at Memorial Hall, 1 McMillan Street, Anglesea.
This is the last Anglesea Futures consultation – DELWP’s community consultation process to present and seek feedback on draft land use scenarios.
It would be great to see as many people as possible at these events, to make sure we assure a 100% renewable future for Anglesea.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for renewables in this area,” Ms Groom said.

10-star housing: ‘The House with No Bills’
Podcast and youtube video of a forum presentation by Tim Adams on 3 July 2017
Architect Tim Adams was BZE’s guest speaker in July 2017. Tim has over 40 years of building design experience and is at the forefront of zero energy and energy efficient house design. Tim was also the instigator of the highly successful BDAV 10 Star Challenge and his early adoption of energy rating tools such as NatHERS makes him a leader in thermal rating, operational energy and life cycle assessment.
Through his company F2 Design, Tim is collaborating on 10 Star housing projects at The Cape sustainable housing project, Sociable Weaver and much more, all with the goal of providing sustainable fully passive dwellings designed for Australians conditions and that do not need heating and cooling.

The Sociable Weaver’s 10 Star home
The ‘10 Star Home’ is the first home to be built in Victoria with a 10-star energy rating, and the first house in Australia to be carbon positive and built to a zero waste model.
The group behind this innovative project are The Sociable Weaver, a new home design and build company formed by two creative minds – award-winning builder Dave Martin, formerly of Archiblox, and Melbourne social entrepreneur, Danny Almagor, co-founder and CEO of Small Giants.

Freedom…
“We’ve gone completely off grid recently and are loving it. It’s sensible to be aware of our usage and amount of power available and even better knowing we aren’t paying greedy power companies any of our hard earned money. Freedom…”

Federal Labor continues silence on export coal and climate change
“After yesterday’s defeat of the government by a Labor amendment to a bill on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, exactly where does Wills MP Peter Khalil stand on opposing Adani after he voted down a Greens amendment? Both Greens and Labor amendments where “stunts” to embarrass the government but it highlights the problem Federal Labor has in it’s continued silence on the export coal sector and climate change. The two Labor MPs who have publicly opposed Adani, Peter Khalil and David Feeney, voted along party lines.”
~ John Englart
Labor’s hypocrisy, cowardliness and both political and economical stupidity on the big coal questions is going to cost them votes. Potentially game-changing numbers of votes at the next election. When well aware what is happening with our climate and how close we are to the most dangerous tipping points, how irresponsible is it then to be encouraging the construction of more coal mines just as long as they meet what Labor terms “the highest environmental standards”…? Outrageously wrong!

Acknowledgement
We at The Sustainable Hour would like to pay our respect to the traditional custodians of the land on which we are broadcasting, the Wathaurong People, and pay our respect to their elders, past, present and future.
The traditional owners lived in harmony with the environment and with the climate for hundreds of generations. It is not clear – yet – that as European settlers we have demonstrated that we can live in harmony for hundreds of generations, but it is clear that we can learn from the indigenous, traditional owners of this land.
When we talk about the future, it means extending our respect to those children not yet born, the generations of the future – remembering the old saying that…
The decisions currently being made around Australia to ignore climate change are being made by those who won’t be around by the time the worst effects hit home. How utterly disgusting, disrespectful and unfair is that?
