“We know what the threat is (climate change).
We know what the cause is (emissions of greenhouse gases)
We know what the solutions are (renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy conservation).
We have the technology (wind, solar, geothermal, smart grids, electricity-powered transportation, LIGHT SWITCHES!).
All we need now is the political will to act.
I think I’m going to go write a letter to my local MP.”

 GLOBAL | AUGUST 2015:

Freeze fossil fuel extraction to stop climate crimes

“On the eve of the UN Climate Conference to be held in Paris-Le Bourget, we declare our determination to keep fossil fuels in the ground. This is the only way forward.

Concretely, governments have to end subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, and to freeze fossil fuel extraction by leaving untouched 80% of all existing fossil fuel reserves.

We know that this implies a great historical shift. We will not wait for states to make it happen. Slavery and apartheid did not end because states decided to abolish them. Mass mobilisations left political leaders no other choice.

The situation today is precarious. We have, however, a unique opportunity to reinvigorate democracy, to dismantle the dominance of corporate political power, to transform radically our modes of production and consumption. Ending the era of fossil fuels is one important step towards the fair and sustainable society we need.

We will not waste this opportunity, in Paris or elsewhere, today or tomorrow.”

 GLOBAL | JULY 2015:

Sign The Fuji Declaration

In the same spirit as Pope Francis’ encyclical, The Fuji Declaration is a charter for a new spiritual civilisation for a sustainable future.

The declaration is an international alliance of individuals and organisations who are united by a shared commitment to advance a more harmonious, compassionate and sustainable era for all humanity.

“A new chapter in the story of humanity is within reach. Imagine a world where the human spirit is freed for deep creativity. Imagine new paradigms forged within all spheres of human activity, setting the stage for a thriving and sustainable future. Please join us in setting this intention and help us promote a global consciousness where all life – in all its diversity – is felt and understood as one.”

The Fuji Declaration, “igniting the divine spark for a thriving world,” has been endorsed by global citizens and pioneers from many different backgrounds, people from different faiths and cultures, including heads-of-state, Nobel laureates, scientists, artists, authors, teachers and world peace advocates from the world over.

“At a critical time—a time of crisis and unsustainability—change is not linear but abrupt. We live in a critical time. The system we have created either breaks down to chaos, or breaks through to a new order. The breakthrough will not come from above, it will not occur at the center, and it will not be driven by money and power. It will come at the grassroots, at the creative periphery, and it will be motivated by the divine spark present in the heart and mind of every human being.”
~ Ervin Laszlo

“This Declaration has been endorsed by hundreds of insightful and eminent individuals and organisations in all parts of the world. It is open to enlightened and ethical individuals and organisations wherever they live and in whatever domain of activity they are engaged so long as they endorse its call to return to the wholeness that characterises life on Earth and has hallmarked healthy and sustainable civilisations throughout history.”

If you yearn for a more compassionate and sustainable world, if you resonate with the vision of The Fuji Declaration, or if you just want to share your inspiration with others, this is your moment!

Support Desmond Tutu’s call for 100% renewables by 2050

tutu-petition560

Sign Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott:
“Respond urgently to climate change by setting a renewable energy target of 100% by 2050”

Archbishop Desmond Tutu started this petition in the end of July. Three weeks later it had been signed by 223,000 supporters.
Desmond Tutu wrote in his letter to Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott, and Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon:

“Climate change is one of the greatest moral challenges of our time. It threatens the health of our planet and people; especially the poorest and most vulnerable. It threatens our children’s future and everything we hold dear. It is time for all of us to wake up and take action together — in our local communities, nationally and globally, as well as in our daily lives.

As citizens motivated by faith and other moral traditions, we recognize that there is a grave obligation to act on climate change.

We call on you as leaders to respond urgently to the threats of climate change and set a renewable energy target of 100% by 2050. We need bold action like this to keep global temperature rise below the unacceptably dangerous tipping point of two degrees, to phase out carbon pollution to zero, and to invest resources in sustainable development pathways to build a more flourishing, inclusive and balanced world.

We pledge to do our own part by embracing the moral responsibility to care for our world and for each other and by seeking to live better and more sustainable lives in greater joy and harmony.

Let us act now, boldly and together, to build a better life for all!”

Over two million people have already signed this petition to national, local, and international leaders to rapidly shift our societies and economies to 100% clean energy by 2050.

“Scientists warn us that climate change could accelerate beyond our control, threatening our survival and everything we love. We call on you to keep global temperature rise under the unacceptably dangerous level of 2 degrees C, by phasing out carbon pollution to zero. To achieve this, you must urgently forge realistic global, national and local agreements, to rapidly shift our societies and economies to 100% clean energy by 2050.  GLOBAL:

A message on climate change to world leaders

The letter states, in part:
“Human-induced climate change is an issue beyond politics. It transcends parties, nations, and even generations. For the first time in human history, the very health of the planet, and therefore the bases for future economic development, the end of poverty, and human wellbeing, are in the balance. If we were facing an imminent threat from beyond Earth, there is no doubt that humanity would immediately unite in common cause. The fact that the threat comes from within – indeed from ourselves – and that it develops over an extended period of time does not alter the urgency of cooperation and decisive action.
The world has agreed to limit the mean temperature increase to less than 2-degrees Centigrade (2°C). Even a 2°C increase will carry us to dangerous and unprecedented conditions not seen on Earth during the entire period of human civilization.”

The Energy Reality Pledge

Energy is at the heart of the human predicament in the 21st century. The ecological and economic costs of non-renewable (and disappearing) fossil fuels are rising rapidly, and dragging down our economy. In every sense of the word, this is unsustainable. It’s time to remake our energy economy under different terms. Join the rest of us who are ready to create our own energy future that doesn’t destroy the planet… just to keep the lights on.

“
I’m ready for an energy reality that:

• Prioritises reducing overall demand for energy through efficiency and curtailment.

• Treats fossil fuels like the valuable, limited resources they are.

• Shifts from centralised non-renewable energy supplied by unaccountable multinationals to decentralised renewable energy produced by communities.

• Minimizes the environmental and social impacts of this transition.”

Keep Big Energy out of the climate treaty talks

Tell world leaders: Big Energy corporations are the ones responsible for our climate change crisis. They have no place in determining policies to reverse it.

Climate change affects all of us, and it’s having a devastating impact on our planet every day. But while we work to combat it, Big Energy is jumping at every opportunity during high-level climate talks to advance its own interests and undermine progress.

We can’t let that continue. That’s why we are calling on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres to keep Big Energy out of the climate treaty talks and create meaningful global policies free from corporate influence.

Endorse 520 scientists’ message to world leaders

If you agree with the scientists that concerted efforts must begin immediately to halt climate disruption, extinctions, ecosystem degradation, environmental contamination, and to humanely stop human population growth and over-consumption where they now prevail, you can indicate this by endorsing their consensus statement (PDF, 51 pages, 7 MB) with a message to the world leaders.

By doing that, you state that “I agree that the best scientific evidence available indicates that if we do not take action to immediately reverse these dangerous environmental trends, our world and the world of our children will be substantially degraded with respect to what we have today.”

The timing is right — I don’t think you’ll get a second chance like this to be part of part a collective, global statement to world leaders about taking more serious action.

Join WWF as they campaign to make renewable energy the new normal.

“If the world can find a sustainable solution to our energy demands, and lose the coal, oil and gas addiction, we will solve the biggest problem of our time. This can be achieved through collective action and sound investment decisions.

It’s an ambitious ask and we can’t do it alone or in a single year! But, this year we pledge our commitment to increase the use of renewable energy by asking our financial institutions and governments to invest more money in a renewable energy future.

We need a sustainable future. Switching to renewable energy isn’t just the best choice. It’s our only option as we move on the trajectory of dangerous climate change.

Renewable energy technologies are already cost-effective, and provide affordable alternatives around the world, produced in ways that can be sustained by the global economy and the planet.

A transition to renewable energy is even more viable now than it was five years ago. Investments in renewables are increasing; solar is competing with fossil fuels in parts of India and new wind power is cheaper than coal in Australia. Cities around the world are beginning to commit to 100% renewable energy.

The only way to secure a future powered by clean and sustainable energy (by wind, water and the sun) is to ensure more investments. Now.

Seize Your Power will contribute to a decisive shift in energy financing towards renewable energy. It will create public support and political space to make renewable energy the new normal.”

 BRITISH COLUMBIA:

CLEAR COMMITMENT FOR A COOLER PLANET

“Climate change is a planetary emergency. Governments have failed to respond to the scale and urgency of the moment. British Columbians want the provincial government to take far-reaching action to reduce carbon emissions and protect life on Earth in a rapidly changing climate. We must all make radical changes towards a truly sustainable lifestyle. On top of individual change, decisive government action is critical to make the shift from dangerous resource extraction to a sane, low-carbon economy.
This petition is a joint project in collaboration with Sierra Club BC the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ Climate Justice Project. Signatures collected from all of the participating organizations will be combined and then delivered to the provincial government.
From the letter to the Premier, an excerpt:

“I urge you to show true moral and political leadership and commit our province to real climate action:
• Recommit to the provincial emissions reduction targets and table a platform to meet them, in particular by expanding and increasing the carbon tax in a socially just way and with no exceptions or exemptions for big polluters.
• Stop new fossil fuel projects, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, coal mines, and both the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipelines.
• Shift all available resources toward renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, which will create new, sustainable jobs.
• Increase conservation of BC’s land and marine ecosystems, to protect carbon sinks and species habitat, and allow for clean water, clean air, and food production in a changing climate.

The Monster Climate Petition

VWT’s petition to the federal government
Inspired by what Victorian colonial women did in 1891 to press their claim for voting rights (in what became known as ‘The Monster Petition’), members of VWT asked themselves: “Could we provide a mechanism for a huge numbers of Australian women, men and children to give voice to their concern about the almost total lack of national leadership on securing a safe climate?”

They can and they have! It is called the Monster Climate Petition.

Every one of us can sign our names, including our children. Climate change affects us all. Start with your own signature, and then gather signatures from your household, family and friends.

Women all over the country have a huge collective power to ensure that hundreds of thousands of women, men and children put their names and signatures to this Petition to our House of Representatives.

After you’ve gathered as many signatures as possible, mail all the signed petition forms back to the VWT office (details at vwt.org.au) by 8 November 2014, before the G20 Summit in Brisbane to show the world how many Australians care about climate change.

 AUSTRALIA:

CLIMATE EMERGENCY PETITION

Save the Planet Political Party writes: “Please consider signing and passing on this link to a petition to Australia’s political and community leaders calling for the creation of emergency plans for the restoration of a safe climate.

It’s time that our leaders took the climate emergency seriously. Some have fallen asleep at the wheel and others are actively blocking effective action. The tiny handful who know that much more is needed need more support and encouragement. We have already entered the era of dangerous climate change and are heading towards the era of catastrophic breakdown.

But even at this late stage, it is still possible to restore a safe climate (with pre-industrial temperatures). We can still avoid over 90% of the anticipated impacts — but only if emergency speed action is taken to create a zero emissions economy and to take the excess CO2 out of the air.

For too long, too many people have been promoting low and slow emissions reduction targets as if this could do the job. It’s time to get real. To push our leaders out of their rut. To provide leadership ourselves.”

 EUROPE:

“Time to scrap the EU Emissions Trading Scheme”

“No amount of structural tinkering will get away from the fact that the EU has chosen the wrong tool to reduce emissions in Europe. It is inherently too weak to get the EU to where it needs to be in the necessary timescale,” says Hannah Mowat from FERN.
On 16 April 2013, more than 130 organisations had signed the ‘Time to scrap the ETS’ Declaration. If your organisation wants to sign on, send an email to scrap.the.ets@gmail.com.

DENMARK

 DENMARK:

Sign letter to Danish public service broadcasters DR and TV2

When it comes to covering the climate crisis and global warming in the media, we believe public service broadcasters could take the lead now. This is the very essence of the concept of ‘public service’: to do what is necessary when the country and its citizens is in danger. When our livelihood is being threatened.

TV, radio and digital services financed by state and public license fees must give a much better coverage of this area — one that is in accordance with how important it is to process and identify these issues in the public sphere. Because they are nothing less than crucial to our future prosperity and safety.

Therefore, a petition was started in Denmark, asking the public service broadcasters, DR and TV2 — the two broadcasters that taxpayers and license fee payers are co-financing — to come up with a higher quality of news journalism and generally to cover climate issues much better in 2013 than they did in 2012.

Omstilling nu – Transition Now

Top 7 Things to do to Influence Your Politician on Climate Change

• Set up a meeting at their office to talk about why the issue is important to you, not just the science of climate change
• Host a meeting and invite them personally to either attend or participate (either in person, through a letter or personalized email)
• Call your politician or leave a message for them to personally call you
• Work with them on a petition for them to personally present
• If they are supportive, ask how you can help them build more support
• Write a personal, hand-written note
• Tweet @ them or private message them on facebook

Top 7 Inefficient ways to influence Politicians on Climate Change
• Hosting a protest without sufficient numbers and unclear messages/asks
• Online petitions that are not able to be presented in the House of Commons or Legislature
• Postcard campaigns
• Impersonal or standardized emails or letters
• Hosting meetings or protests without informing the politician or without sufficient time for them to attend or participate
• Long reports (great for evidence but hard for any politician to read all that come in)
• Complaining at your kitchen tables but never voicing your concern
• NOT VOTING

On Pinterest.com, create a board for ‘Environment’, ‘Climate Change Solutions’, ‘Going Green’, ‘Energy efficiency’, or whatever you think you’d like to collect knowledge and inspiration about — and then begin to pin. In the beginning, it might seem like a silly thing to spend time on, but you’ll find that over time you actually learn something from those stories, infographics, photos and videos, which you begin to pin, or re-pin.

For inspiration, make a board-search – for instance for boards with titles such as: SustainableSustainable planetSustainable livingSave the planet
