We need to start flooding our local media outlets with letters to the editor (think: Geelong Advertiser, the Indy). We want to create a massive hype behind this event.

MEETING WITH LIBERAL MP SARAH HENDERSON
Stephen Higgs joined Sara to meet with Sarah Henderson to present the results from the survey conducted at the end of July. Sarah Henderson has previously stated her concerns on commercial grounds about the NAIF loan for Adani.

As Sarah’s concerns have centred on commercial viability of the mine, we raised the issue that the power station Adani was going to supply the coal to being up for sale for $0.02. This was clearly new information for Sarah, which will hopefully push her to take an even stronger stand in parliament against the NAIF.

Sarah spoke in depth about the move to renewables and stated her concerns about rising power prices for locals and local businesses. We indicated that the Geelong locals that were surveyed want to see a rapid shift from fossil fuels to renewables.
Sarah has indicated that she will send us a written statement and we will be following up with this to make sure she supplies us with one.


ABC FOUR CORNERS INVESTIGATES ADANI
On Monday 2 October ABC Four Corners will be shining the spotlight on Adani! This is great timing in the lead up to our event on Saturday. Make sure you tune in to ABC Four Corners on Monday @8.30pm.

Labor leader Bill Shorten on Adani: “The mine will go ahead”

At the annual G21 Forum in Torquay on 1 September 2017, where federal party leaders met with local leaders of our region, ALP leader Bill Shorten managed to speak out of both sides of the mouth about how he believes it is possible at the same time to back the climate science and allow new megasize coal mines to go ahead.

What Mr Shorten said, basically, was that Labor thinks this climate-destroying mine will go ahead and that his party has no intentions of trying to stop that.

Bill Shorten replied to a question asked by a member of the #StopAdani Geelong group. Please listen to his exact words – it only takes two minutes – so that you know exactly how a confused opposition leader thinks he is able to claim at the same time that a coalmine can “stand up” environmentally and that Labor are – quote: “un-afraid on the climate debate” and “will back the science”, while, with the other side of his mouth, he rejects all the climate disruptions happening around Australia and the world, including the climate scientists’ dire warnings and rising temperature graphs, and holds his hands over this shockingly irresponsible decision of building a coal megamine.

In Queensland, the Labor government’s Premier is directly and outspokenly supporting the construction of that Adani coalmine, even though everyone knows it will be sending millions of tonnes of climate and reef destructive carbon dioxide into our common atmosphere.

If Shorten had any credibility left, it all crumbled in Torquay. Shorten has joined the ranks of elected leaders who shamefully choose to disregard the consequences of burning more coal and to ignore what the burning of coal means for everyone who lives on this planet.
He will talk about climate change whenever he finds it politically convenient, but little does it matter when it is all talk and no real action.

So, this is where the #StopAdani campaign comes in. When Labor won’t, others will. There’s a #StopAdani ‘Big Day of Action’ coming up on 7 October 2017.

Geelong survey

We have had terrific outcomes of our survey, due to great efforts on the part of a number of members. Congratulations. In short, of 174 respondents, 98 per cent were opposed to the Adani mine and to a NAIF loan for the mine railway.

At our meeting on 1 August, Sara presented the full results in a very clear Powerpoint. Thanks to Sara for excellent work!


Meeting with Labor’s member of federal parliament

Stephen and Kathy joined Sara to meet Richard Marles MP and present the survey to him. Richard showed a surprising depth of understanding of the global warming disaster we are facing, but could only come back to us with the party line which is to oppose the NAIF loan on the grounds that such a large loan should not go to one company.

We indicated that we were not satisfied with that, and asked him to take back to the party the clear expression of the people of Geelong in opposition to both the mine and the railway loan.

Thanks to Kathy for lining up this meeting.

Richard Marles wrote back to us a week later, and we will give soon him another serve in writing. For the meanwhile, the boys at The Sustainable Hour promptly responded by producing this short summary and commentary about his statement.

We have contacted Sarah Henderson’s office requesting a meeting.

The StopAdani Geelong stall at Deakin fair

At a recent fair at Deakin University, the StopAdani Geelong group had a stall. The students most interested in this issue seemed to be the Indian students.

GetUp training workshop

GetUp is organising a StopAdani training day on Saturday 19 August, which Sara is planning to attend, and Simon hopes to join in. The invitation is open to all.


Strategy and planning day

On Saturday 16 September we are planning to hold a morning meeting to create a detailed strategy and implementation plan, from 10am to 1pm followed by lunch at Geelong Library.

Minutes of Meeting 4 September 2017, 6:30pm

Sara had been to the #StopAdani Training Day in Melbourne. The only representative from a non-Melbourne group. She gave an outline of the organisers’ main themes which were

1. Creative Actions
2. Campaign Strategy

She felt our group was doing interesting things on these fronts making reasonable progress with Commonwealth Bank action and approaches to politicians. She said the NAIF loan to Adani was going to need to be the area of concentration of #StopAdani. (Still hoping for personal response from Richard Marles, as opposed to the party line.) And that we’d need to concentrate on Federal politicians as the Queensland Government would support the loan with an election due there shortly.

Kathy confirmed we have an appointment with Sarah Henderson on 19 September 2017. Confirmed that Stephen, Sara and Simon will attend that meeting. Who is her Labor opponent? Should we be approaching him?

#StopAdani organisers confirmed they want to organise a National Action Day and a National Sign Day on 7 October.

Tactical Planning Meeting for our group to be held on Saturday 16 September at Geelong Library 10:00am to 1:00pm to plan tactics and outline our publicity strategy. Rosie from GetUp will attend, and Stephen will confirm library space, Simon to do the agenda, Sara to ask Rosie to facilitate. Attendance welcome to anyone and to be advertised on FB page.

Sara to check whether it would be possible to get a #StopAdani sign up on the Geelong Ring Road Villlawood property (currently a Vote Yes sign there!) as our National Sign Day contribution.

Tim mentioned its Humans in Geelong Day on 8 October and National Day of Action re Refugee Movement, and we will have #StopAdani material at those events through Geelong Sustainability.

Why renewables make perfect sense to this conservative mayor

Rex Parris, the Republican mayor of the Los Angeles suburb Lancaster, speaking at the launch of the Los Angeles Climate Mobilisation.

Mayor Rex Parris is a visionary who has brought amazing sustainable change to a very conservative city and shown that climate action is cost efficient, profitable and just plain makes good sense.

Rex Parris’ speech highlights that climate solutions don’t have a party political colour – this is a con the fossil fuel industry wants us to believe. It also shows that rapidly deploying renewable energy to fight the climate emergency has a number of positive side effects in the community – and this is something we really need to get a better understanding of.

Lancaster has a population of 160,000 people.

“At World War II, what occurred was that our way of life and everything about us was threatened. It was a very real threat. It could have all ended.

And so Republicans and Democrats, and Christians and Muslims, everybody came together, because we had this enemy that was going to crush us if we didn’t.

We came together and survived.

The threat that World War II presented to us is one tenth of the threat that we are facing today.
And what is crazy about is: even Republicans know it. We all know it.
It is the insanity that seems to be overwhelming us. It is hard to comprehend.

CommBank action

Market Forces has run the numbers on the big banks’ lending to fossil fuels and renewables since they committed to support the goal of holding global warming below 2°C. It doesn’t look pretty. They have loaned $17 billion to fossil fuel projects and companies since the Paris climate talks in 2015.

Commbank was a case in point, lending $6 billion to fossil fuels, more than four times their renewable energy lending. What’s worse, they were involved in new fossil fuel project deals that would add 2.8 billion tonnes of carbon emissions to the atmosphere over their lifetimes. That’s more than double the emissions reduced by 2030 from Australia’s greenhouse gas reduction target — gains wiped out by projects that Commbank has supported.

Enough is enough. Take action and tell Commbank that funding new fossil fuels is totally out of line with a stable climate.

The #StopAdani Challenge is heating up

James from Ashburton in Melbourne, a volunteer with the Kooyong #StopAdani group, wrote:

“My local group is turning up the heat on Federal Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg on his home turf until the government rules out public funding for Adani’s mega-polluting coal mine.

We’ve been holding regular actions outside Frydenberg’s office with hundreds of local residents raising their voices. We’re bombarding him with letters from his constituents asking him to get out of dirty coal and into clean energy. And we’ve just signed up to the #StopAdani Challenge to ramp things up even more. And that’s the pressure being applied in just one electorate.

People power works and we’re just getting started! Will you take the #StopAdani Challenge with me and turn up the pressure on your elected representative until they speak out against Adani’s disastrous mine?

Will you join me for the #StopAdani Challenge? If groups across the country take the challenge with us, we can win this! Here’s how to get involved:

If you’re already in a local action group, download the toolkit to survey your community and deliver the results to your MP. Surveying is a great way to have conversations about Adani with people in your community and a great way to show your MP how your community feels.

If you’re not in a local action group yet but you’d like to be, host a screening of Guarding the Galilee, the official #StopAdani documentary, and ask people who attend to start a local group with you. Films are a great way to spark discussion and action.

If you’re not in a local group and you’re not ready to start one, join the mass coordinated call to Prime Minister Turnbull. Call Turnbull once a week, every week until the 6th of August. If hundreds of people sign up to call, we can make sure Turnbull receives calls all day every day.

It’s been so encouraging to see several MPs come out against the mine or the billion dollar handout after overwhelming community pressure. Imagine the impact if right across the country our elected representatives consistently heard from hundreds of the people they represent – we don’t want more dirty, polluting projects like Adani’s mine. We want a future powered by clean energy for everyone, everywhere.

It’s empowering for me to reflect on being part of the huge #StopAdani movement. We are such a diverse group of people, from suburban grassroots groups like mine to Traditional Owners, farmers and locals directly affected by the mine.

I want to see a future where we honour and cherish nature, where we see nature as part of ourselves. I want to help create a future where we have a safe and liveable climate for all.

Together we can win this.

Cairns anti-coal campaigner hijacks Q&A over Canavan’s Adani support

Cairns anti-coal campaigner Michael Dillon interrupted last night’s episode of ABC’s Q&A to deliver a brief anti-Adani message to Senator Matt Canavan before being dragged off stage.

Senator Canavan was being questioned about how Australia could profess to be bringing down carbon emissions while exporting huge amounts of coal when Mr Dillon took to the stage, waving a piece of paper.

“With all due respect, Senator Canavan, you are robbing us of our future and you’re taking away a safe economy for Queensland,” the 20-year-old said before being removed.

Mr Dillon said he was born and raised in Cairns and all of his family was in North Queensland.

“Climate change is savaging my home state. Half of the Great Barrier Reef, especially in the north, has been irreversibly bleached to death by warmer temperatures. When’s it going to stop? I’m 20, I have to live with the Senator’s decisions for the rest of my life,” Mr Dillon further stated.

Background: How the Geelong group started

On 24 May 2017, around 40 local residents from Geelong region came to Beav’s Bar to see the documentary film ‘Guarding the Galilee’ and take part in the launch of a local #StopAdani alliance of groups and individuals who are passionately convinced that this insane Carmichael coal mine that Adani, the Labor Queensland government and the Coalition federal government want to build, is never going to go ahead. And each and every one pledged to do their bit to ensure that it will not happen.

The headline of the meeting was: “Together we stopped fracking in our area. Now we will join thousands of Australians to stop Adani’s insane, climate-destroying coal mine.”

The way the climate emergency is escalating, accepting any new coal mine in 2017 means selfishly stealing the future from our own children and generations to come. More and more Australians have realised that we can no longer just be bystanders passively watching this mad and unnecessary destruction of our country, the Great Barrier Reef included.

Stephen Higgs is one such citizen. He was the principal of Ballarat Grammar for over 20 years. He has retired and moved with his wife to the Geelong region. He introduced the meeting in this way:


The letter by Ian Dunlop, which Stephen Higgs refers to, is entitled: “This is not rhetoric: approving the Adani coal mine will kill people”.

Ian Dunlop was an international oil, gas and coal industry executive, chairman of the Australian Coal Association and chief executive of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a member of the Club of Rome. In the article in Canberra Times he writes:

“If we wait for catastrophe to happen, as we are doing, it will be too late to act. Time is the most important commodity; to avoid catastrophic outcomes requires emergency action to force the pace of change. Australia, along with the Asian regions to our north, is now considered to be “disaster alley”; we are already experiencing the most extreme impacts globally. In these circumstances, opening up a major new coal province is nothing less than a crime against humanity.”

We highly recommend that you read Ian Dunlop’s letter, if you haven’t already – and please don’t just read it: make sure others around you get to read it too. Family, friends, colleagues. This is a message that needs to get around:

Watching the documentary ‘Guarding the Galilee’ was a good experience. It mainly consists of interviews with Australians who explain why they have joined the #StopAdani movement. One #StopAdani activist said:

“We are not giving up. It is going to continue right until the project’s defeated. It’s the biggest challenge facing global humanity. Someone needs to be doing it, and… why not me?”

Karla Way-McPhail, a director of a so-called “independent board” due to provide recommendations regarding a $900m taxpayer loan to Adani, has publicly – and not surprisingly – declared she is “very supportive” of its “vital” coal project. Not surprisingly, because Ms Way-McPhail happens to be running several mining labour and equipment hire companies. Asked by Guardian Australia if her public support for the Adani mine compromised perceptions of her independence, Way-McPhail said: “Due to confidentiality and privacy obligations I am unable to make comment or respond.” Smells fishy?
