100% powered on solar, the 100th Sustainable Hour on 94.7 The Pulse was broadcasted live from the Act on Climate Festival at Steampacket Gardens on 21 November 2015.

In the first hour we talked with Cr Andy Richards, Leo Renkin, Mary-Jane Walker, Michael Martinez, Jack Nyhof, Robert Skehan, and Andrea Pape.

Mary-Jane Walker is an artist and a scientist who is part of a group organising Geelong’s first solarpowered art exhibition in 2016, titled ‘The future stARTS now’ – harnessing the power of art to light the way. The exhibition organisers are currently calling for entries for the event which will be showing examples of solar powered artworks from artists, community groups and schools.

Jack runs a community radio show on 94.7 The Pulse, he has founded a group called Earth People Animals, is a member of the new Geelong City Youth Environment Action Group as well as the Australia Youth Climate Coalition, and he acted as an Ambassador for the Act On Climate Team which signed up for Run Geelong.

About the Act on Climate Festival

The Act on Climate Festival was a community festival held on 20-23 November 2015 to empower people with ways they can act on climate change. Alternative Technology Association – Geelong EV Branch | Discussion, information and support regarding Electric Vehicle conversion.

An exhibit of cars that have been converted to electric vehicles. These vehicles have had their Internal Combustion Engine(ICE) replaced by an electric motor, which is powered by electricity stored in a battery pack located in the vehicle. The batteries are mostly located where the fuel tank used to be located, before it was removed.

Grants for energy efficiency and materials assessments

Sustainability Victoria offers grants for energy efficiency and materials assessments. If you’re interested in applying for a grant to establish your baseline and understand what actions you can take to reduce costs in your organisation/business, you’ll find more information below.

Business Productivity Program:

Cutting material and energy costs
More than 130 Victorian businesses had energy and or material assessments conducted as part of Sustainability Victoria’s energy and materials efficiency program between 2012 and 2015.
Businesses involved in the program saved an average $56,000 per year through energy efficiency actions and $158,000 per year through materials efficiency actions, with average pay back periods of 3.3 years for energy and 1.4 years for material projects.

New Round of Resource Assessment Grants now open
Sustainability Victoria is offering grants to eligible business to cover up to 50% of the cost to engage a consultant to conduct a resource assessment of its operations. Grants are capped at $5,000 for an energy assessment and $10,000 for a materials or combined material and energy assessment.

A $3,000 implementation support bonus is also available for businesses that can show evidence of implementing one or more recommendations from their assessment.

Closing dates for grants:
4.00 pm on Friday 12 February 2016 for energy assessments
and
4.00 pm on Friday 13 May 2016 for materials assessments and for combined material and energy assessments.
