“Renew Geelong!”, everyone says – but how? For a start by creating a new narrative around how we deal with the employment crisis that Geelong is currently experiencing. In Chinese writing, the word ‘crisis’ is made up of two signs – one for ‘danger’ and one for ‘opportunity’. In The Sustainable Hour on 12 March 2014 we talk about opportunities.
Guests in the studio:
• Telmo Lima, architect and urban planner, and
• Leo Renkin, manager of 94.7 The Pulse.

Not only is Geelong in an employment crisis which to a large extent has to do with globalisation and changes in the global economy. Additionally, it looks as if this kind of employment transition which Geelong now is being forced to deal with could at the same time be an excellent opportunity to encourage Geelong and district residents to become involved in actively seeking solutions to the climate change crisis.
Let’s face it, folks: Currently, Australia is hiding its head in the sand when scientists talk about the global catastrophe they are predicting because of our carbon emissions. We need to change that. And to start doing that, there is no other way around it: we first of all need to believe in that we can handle this, that a range of great solutions are right here in front of us, and we do have the capacity to turn the danger and the crisis around to become an opportunity for our city.
