We received the following sensible call from FossilAdBan.org:

Call on Brisbane Council to ban ads for companies behind weather disasters. Record breaking extreme weather has seen homes destroyed, lives lost, ecosystems wiped out and billions spent on disaster recovery. Yet Brisbane City Council still allows companies that sell planet-warming fossil fuels to advertise on hundreds of bus shelters and digital screens that it owns. Banning fossil fuels starts with banning fossil fuel ads. That’s why we’re calling on the Lord Mayor of Brisbane to end fossil fuel promotions on council-owned property. Join our call to ban fossil fuel ads in Brisbane. Email Mayor Adrian Schrinner now. On Stanley street near the Gabba, between 19 December and 15 January, we’ve commissioned a billboard calling out fossil fuel’s role in Queensland’s record bushfires. The sign says fossil fuel advertising should be banned in Brisbane, as the first reasonable step towards phasing out coal, oil and gas and in recognition of the human and economic costs of climate change. ![]() Battling bushfires, floods and storms isn’t just dangerous – it’s expensive too. Disaster reconstruction costs in Brisbane have been more than $226 million since 2011, costs that will rise as warming increases. This summer’s fire emergency follows the 2022 floods that are estimated to have cost Queensland $7.7 billion. The billboard is the first of several billboards that will be erected over the summer. So if you’re in other states, look out for updates. “We don’t need science to tell us things are getting rapidly more dangerous. You can just look out your kitchen window and see things getting worse. Climate disasters are hitting more and more Australians, more frequently. Communities are still reeling from bushfires when there’s suddenly a record breaking flood or a cyclone. With fossil fuel ads all over Brisbane it’s like the big companies and the council are both making money while we pay for the disasters they’re causing. Is that fair?” Jo Dodds President Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action Email Mayor Adrian Schrinner ![]() What can you do? Brisbane City Council has a strong history of climate action. Restricting fossil fuel ads and sponsorships on council controlled property and events is an easy next step that prevents fossil fuel companies from promoting pollution and supports Council’s Brisbane. Clean, Green, Sustainable plan. The council is committed to ‘support Brisbane residents and businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions’ so we need to tell them that this is an action they must take.
